In the season of Advent we recognize the anticipation of God’s people as they waited for the Messiah to come. What would He be like? More specifically, what would He do? In the gospels there are several instances in which Jesus states explicitly what He came to do. In Mark 10:45 Jesus says “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and give His life as a ransom for many.” In Matthew 5:17 Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law of the Prophets: I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” What’s more, in Luke 19 Jesus says, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” Therefore, this advent season we will look at these texts reflecting on what Jesus came to do here on earth, while ending our series by lookint at Philippians 2 in which Paul reminds us that Jesus’ coming into this world is culminated by Him being exalted to the highest place of authority.
